Still Life Painting Project for Advanced Art

• Learning to work with oil paints
• Learning underpainting technique, establishing an overall pattern of lights and darks
• Creating a continuous flow of light throughout the painting

Assignment: Paint a compostion of objects from direct observation. First tone your canvas with a burnt umber midtone. Mass in the forms to obtain correct placement and perspective. With heavier paint, lay in the darks. In doing so look for connecting patterns, in both form shadows and cast shadows, subject and background. After darks have been painted, paint the background with heavier paint, then move to the the subject. Soften edges where needed to help with continuity of lights across the composition. Include reflected lght in shadow areas.
