Grid Drawing Project

This project focuses on:

• compostional issues: repetition, rotation and placement; balancing lights and darks; creating an abstract composition by cropping and juxtaposing realistic elements in an unusual way
• rendering in correct proportion and perpective
• rendering forms in chlaroscuro

Assignment: Lay out a 12" x 12" grid on your paper. Divide into nine 3"x 3" squares. Select a theme for your drawing., and render images of that theme in literal representations of a single subject. In either case, work from photographs, and use a viewfinder to crop sections of images for each square. Render each square using a full range of tones from darkest to lightest. For you grid compostion, rotate images and consider their placement in balancing shapes and values throughout.
